James Rumsey was an inventor of some renown in the late 18th century. He was known by some of the giants of early American history, well regarded by the likes of George Washington and Ben Franklin. Some scholars credit James with invention of the steamboat, but the evidence says otherwise. Nonetheless, he made important contributions to the art of steam propulsion.
